Espanyol have appointed Eder Sarabia as their new first-team head coach. The club announced the deal on the evening of Wednesday 28 October, a day after sacking Manolo González. Sarabia has signed a contract that runs until 30 June 2028.
Sarabia, 46, started coaching in the youth setup at Danok Bat and later worked in Villarreal's academy. He then became Quique Setién's assistant at Las Palmas, Real Betis and Barcelona. After that he had spells as head coach of Andorra and Elche, the club says.
He had been out of management since leaving Elche at the end of the 2025-26 season. At the time he spoke about the physical and personal demands of the job. "I need to look after other fundamental things in my life," he said then, Xinhua reports.
Jon López, Jon Moreno, Aitor Unzué and Álvaro González join his coaching staff. Sarabia is also a former Espanyol player and made 82 appearances for the club. He will be officially presented next Tuesday.
He will not be in charge for Espanyol's next game. Reserve-team coach Sergio García takes temporary charge for Friday's LaLiga match away to Villarreal (Friday 30 October, 21:00 WAT), Xinhua reports. Espanyol were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by fourth-tier Sestao River on Tuesday.
