Espanyol have sacked head coach Manolo González. The club confirmed it in an official statement on the evening of Tuesday 27 October. It came hours after a Copa del Rey first-round defeat at fourth-tier Sestao River.
Sestao won 4-3 after extra time at Estadio Las Llanas, on a pitch hit by heavy rain. Defender Jon Rojo scored the winner in the 121st minute, Football España and AP report. Espanyol had led 3-2 in stoppage time before Ander Laka levelled.
The cup exit followed a poor run in LaLiga. Football España, citing AFP, says Espanyol had taken one point from their previous 15 in the league. They have five defeats and a draw in their last six games in all competitions.
In its statement, the club said González leaves after more than three seasons and 107 official games in charge of the first team. It thanked him for his work and wished him well. El País reports that Sergio García, coach of the club's reserve side, could take charge for now. The club has not confirmed this.
Espanyol's next game is a LaLiga trip to Villarreal on Friday 30 October.
