Iwobi can pass Salah's Premier League mark at Villa Park
Alex Iwobi can pass Mohamed Salah's Premier League appearance total on Saturday 31 October if he plays for Fulham against Aston Villa at Villa Park, kick-off 21:00 WAT. A 329th game would put the Nigeria midfielder alone in second place among African players, with only Kolo Touré ahead of him.

Key points: can Iwobi pass Salah's Premier League appearance mark?
- Iwobi drew level with Salah on 328 Premier League games when Fulham won 1-0 at Coventry City.
- A 329th game at Villa Park would put him alone in second place among African players.
- Touré made 353 appearances, so Iwobi needs 26 more games to take the record outright.
- Villa v Fulham kicks off at 21:00 WAT on Saturday 31 October at Villa Park.
Iwobi drew level with Salah on 328 when Fulham won 1-0 at Coventry City last weekend, ESPN reported. Oscar Bobb scored the winner there, a week after Iwobi's goal settled the 1-0 win over Hull City. Touré made 353 appearances for Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, so from 328 Iwobi needs 25 more games to equal the African record and 26 to take it outright.
The level total hides a large difference in playing time. BusinessDay puts Salah on 26,785 league minutes and Iwobi on 22,898. Iwobi played 73 minutes at Coventry, with 60 touches and 51 completed passes at 86.3% accuracy, the same report said.
Will Iwobi play at Villa Park?
Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa reported no new injuries after the midweek EFL Cup defeat by Crystal Palace, according to BBC Sport. He said Antonee Robinson "will start tomorrow" and that Emile Smith Rowe must "wait for his opportunity", but he did not name his midfield, so Iwobi's place is not confirmed. Punch lists Iwobi and Calvin Bassey among seven Nigerians in contention this weekend and says Bassey has played every minute of Fulham's eight league games this season.
Arbeloa praised the opposition and their coach. "When you have a top coach with top players, normally you have a top team," he said, and called Unai Emery "one of the best coaches in the world".
Villa come in with form behind them. They beat Manchester City 2-1 last weekend, and Emery has won eight of his nine league meetings with Fulham, Punch says. Speaking at Bodymoor Heath, Emery told Aston Villa FC that Fulham are "playing really well" and set out the table himself: "they have 8 points, we have 11 points." Villa are looking for a third league win in a row.
Where does Iwobi stand among Nigerians?
At home he is already well clear. Iwobi passed Shola Ameobi's Nigerian record of 298 appearances, and in 2024 he overtook Nwankwo Kanu's 29 assists to hold the Nigerian assists record too, ESPN reported. Kanu finished on 273 appearances, Yakubu Aiyegbeni on 252, John Mikel Obi on 249 and Joseph Yobo on 228. Emmanuel Ikpeme, the NFF's acting general secretary, said the federation would "be very happy to see him become the African with the most appearances in the Premier League in the near future".
TuSport desk: the numbers behind game 329
The date itself is a landmark. Iwobi's first Premier League game came off the bench for Arsenal in a 3-0 win at Swansea City on 31 October 2015, ESPN records. If he plays at Villa Park, game 329 lands 11 years to the day after game one.
Our arithmetic on the BusinessDay minutes shows the tie is only a tie in games played. Salah averages about 81.7 minutes per Premier League appearance and Iwobi about 69.8. The gap of 3,887 minutes is worth roughly 43 full 90-minute matches, so the two have reached 328 by very different routes.
Touré's record is also within reach this season on paper. Fulham have played eight league games, which leaves 30 to come, counting Saturday's. Iwobi needs 26 of them to pass 353, so he can miss four and still finish the season as Africa's record holder. Playing every remaining game would take him past Touré in Fulham's 34th league match. Missing five or more would push the record into 2027-28.
Bassey is chasing a different marker. Eight full league games adds up to 720 minutes so far. Yobo's 3,420 minutes for Everton in 2006-07 remain the only full 38-game season by a Nigerian in the competition, and Bassey would need every minute of all 30 remaining games to match it.
Why it matters for Nigeria
One appearance at Villa Park moves a Nigerian alone into second on the African list for the first time, and every game after that counts toward Touré.
