Five Carabao Cup fourth-round games were played on Wednesday 28 October, and two of them went to penalties. Liverpool and Manchester City both needed shootouts to reach the quarter-finals.

Liverpool and Chelsea drew 1-1 at Anfield in a game that kicked off at 21:00 WAT. Both goals were penalties, three minutes apart, just before half-time. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead on 40 minutes, and Cody Gakpo levelled on 43 minutes after a Wesley Fofana handball, BBC Sport reports.

Both sides had chances to win it in the second half. Ronald Araújo missed a good header for Liverpool, and Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders saved from Bradley Barcola. There was no extra time, so the game went straight to penalties.

The first seven kicks were all scored. Vitinha Barco then hit the post for Chelsea, but Konstantinos Tsimikas blasted over when he had the chance to win it for Liverpool, and Jordan Henderson made it 4-4. In sudden death, Giorgi Mamardashvili saved from Chelsea substitute Emanuel Emegha. Joe Gomez then rifled his kick into the top corner, and Fofana sent Chelsea's next one over the bar, BBC Sport reports.

Manchester City drew 2-2 with Brighton at the Etihad and won the shootout 4-3. Brighton led twice. Mamadou Yalcouyé scored on 30 minutes, and Mateo Kovačić equalised from outside the box 10 minutes later. Georginio Rutter put Brighton back in front two minutes after half-time, and Vitor Reis made it 2-2 on 72 minutes after a Rayan Cherki set piece, ESPN's match data shows.

City goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli saved from Brighton's Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk in the shootout. Kovačić missed for City, but Cherki scored the winning kick. BBC Sport says Erling Haaland watched from the stands.

Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium. Amine Adli scored on seven minutes, Lewis Cook added a second from a tight angle on 51 minutes, and Álvaro Rodríguez made it three on 69 minutes. BBC Sport says it is Bournemouth's fifth win in a row, all with clean sheets, under Marco Rose.

Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Fulham. Eddie Nketiah volleyed in a Mingueza cross on a fast break on 37 minutes. Fulham had about three-quarters of the ball and 14 shots to Palace's four, ESPN's match data shows, but could not find an equaliser. Nigeria internationals Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi both started for Fulham, and Iwobi went off on 72 minutes.

Sunderland beat Brentford 3-2 at the Stadium of Light, with all four first-half goals coming in a 16-minute spell. Chemsdine Talbi scored on 26 minutes and Tutierov added a second three minutes later. Malick Fofana headed one back for Brentford, and Callum Wilson made it 3-1 before the break. Igor Thiago headed in for Brentford in stoppage time, but Sunderland held on.

In the quarter-final draw made after the games, Liverpool were drawn at home to Bournemouth, Manchester City at home to Bradford City and Crystal Palace at home to Sunderland, BBC Sport reports.
