Michael Carrick arrived at Manchester United's training ground on Tuesday 27 October with his position under major threat after a poor start to the season, BBC Sport reports.
BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel says Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann both feature prominently on the list of candidates United have explored. Sources told the BBC that Howe, out of work since leaving Newcastle in the summer, is open to joining United if Carrick loses his job. Nagelsmann is available after leaving Germany after the World Cup.
The Guardian reports United would need to pay Newcastle about £3m in compensation if they want Howe. Antonio Conte is also open to a return, while Unai Emery is admired but under contract at Aston Villa until 2029.
No decision on Carrick's future had been communicated by Tuesday morning. United prepare to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 31 October (12:30 GMT / 13:30 WAT). Carrick signed a two-year deal after an interim spell that ended last season in third place.
