The last three games of Wednesday's MLS midweek round finished early on Thursday morning, Nigerian time, and there was a big win for the Western Conference leaders.
Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego FC 4-1 at BC Place. Aleksa Cvetković opened the scoring after 24 minutes and Brian White headed in a second before half-time. Ryan Gauld made it 3-0 with a header on 66 minutes and Bruno Caicedo added a fourth ten minutes later. Onni Valakari headed in a late reply for San Diego. Vancouver's Rayan Elloumi was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time.
The win takes Vancouver to 58 points from 32 games, four ahead of FC Dallas, with two games of the regular season left. The Whitecaps were playing their first home game after five in a row on the road.
Houston Dynamo won 1-0 at Seattle Sounders. Lucas Halter scored the only goal after 26 minutes, heading in Mateusz Bogusz's cross from a corner. It ended a seven-match winless run for Houston, who move up to 51 points. Seattle stay on 43.
San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids drew 2-2 at PayPal Park. Reid Roberts headed San Jose in front on 15 minutes from a Timo Werner corner, and Morgan Whittaker equalised 11 minutes later. Werner was sent off on 71 minutes, and two minutes after that Darren Yapi put Colorado 2-1 up. Colorado's Kosi Thompson was then sent off on 75 minutes, and Jack Jasinski headed in the equaliser for San Jose from a corner on 83 minutes.
Colorado could have secured a playoff place with a win and other results going their way, the club said before the game. The draw leaves them on 43 points, level with Seattle and one ahead of Real Salt Lake. San Jose have 49 points.
The MLS regular season ends on Saturday 7 November.
