What happened in Atlético 0-2 Bayern?
Bayern Munich beat Atlético Madrid 2-0 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday 3 November 2026 in matchday four of the Champions League league phase. Lennart Karl scored after 54 minutes and Konrad Laimer added the second on 74, with Harry Kane providing the assist, according to BBC Sport's match centre. It was goalless at half-time in front of a crowd of 69,821, and French referee François Letexier took charge of the 21:00 WAT kick-off.
The opener came from a home error. Robin Le Normand could not clear after a deflected shot from Tom Bischof, AP reported, and Karl nipped in to lift the ball over the advancing Jan Oblak, as Bundesliga.com described it. Twenty minutes later Kane released Laimer, who fired into the roof of the net to settle the game.
How did Lennart Karl make Champions League history?
Karl is 18 years and 254 days old. Citing UEFA, AP said only Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé and Raúl reached five Champions League goals at a younger age, which makes the Germany midfielder the fourth youngest to do it. ESPN listed what those three had scored before turning 19: 11 for Yamal, 10 for Mbappé and six for Raúl. Karl had gone close before his goal too, lifting a Kane pass just over the bar.
Did Harry Kane equal Ronaldo's record?
No. Kane arrived having scored in each of his previous 10 Champions League appearances, so one more would have matched Cristiano Ronaldo's record run, BBC Sport noted. In his first European game since winning the Ballon d'Or he did not score, dragging an acrobatic effort wide and a low shot off target. He still made the decisive pass for Laimer and finished as BBC users' highest-rated player on 8.80. Oblak also pushed a deflected Dayot Upamecano strike onto the crossbar, and Upamecano had a header ruled out for a foul, Bundesliga.com reported.
How did Ademola Lookman do for Atlético?
Lookman started on the bench and came on in the 59th minute, five minutes after the opener, as Diego Simeone made a triple change. Koke, Lookman and Lee Kang-in replaced Le Normand, Alexander Sørloth and Álex Baena, according to Bundesliga.com. The Nigeria forward's best moment came in stoppage time: BBC Sport's live text credits him with the pass for a left-footed Dávid Hancko shot from the six-yard box that Neuer saved in the 93rd minute.
That leaves Lookman on nine Champions League goals. Before the game SportCabal recorded that total as level with Obafemi Martins, joint second among Nigerian scorers in the competition behind Victor Osimhen, so the wait for a 10th goes on.
What did Diego Simeone say after the defeat?
The loss ended Atlético's nine-game unbeaten run, and Simeone refused to criticise his players, Into the Calderon reported. "Today, up until the 55th or 60th minute, we competed very well," he said. On the opening goal he added: "Goals are always down to mistakes, or at least most of them are; there's always a mistake. This time it was our turn."
Asked about Le Normand's angry reaction to being substituted, Simeone called him "a very decent, very honourable, hard-working person". He said Bayern, like Arsenal, are better sides than Atlético at present, and that in knockout ties "we have to go all the way to 120 because 100 isn't enough." He also wants an immediate response, saying the team "need to bounce back for Sunday".
Where does the result leave Atlético and Bayern?
Bayern are unbeaten in the competition and move to eight points, eighth in ESPN's league-phase table before Wednesday's matches. Atlético stay on four points and drop to 22nd for now. Bayern's next Champions League game is against Lille on Wednesday 25 November, while Atlético face Norwegian side Viking on matchday five, BBC Sport reported. Bayern did all this without Vincent Kompany, still absent on medical grounds, and without Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz, ESPN noted.
TuSport desk: checking our pre-match board against the result
Our matchday preview built Bayern's and Atlético's availability from three separate briefings, without guessing a line-up. Set against BBC Sport's confirmed teams, it held up. Manuel Neuer started and wore the armband, Michael Olise started behind Kane, and Karl, one of the young options interim coach Aaron Danks had named, scored the opener. Koke, fit again but short of rhythm, began on the bench and came on after the first goal.
The two record chases we set side by side both stalled. Kane's Champions League run ends at 10 games, one short of Ronaldo, and Lookman stays one goal away from passing Martins. For Nigerian viewers the clock stayed simple: Madrid and Lagos share a time zone, so the 21:00 kick-off was 21:00 WAT and full time arrived shortly before 23:00 WAT.
We use one data set for the numbers. BBC Sport's match stats give Bayern 58.5% of the ball, 19 shots to nine and expected goals of 1.77 against 0.83, while Atlético committed 13 fouls to Bayern's three. Other outlets counted shots differently, so we do not mix their totals. The table maths from our preview also played out: a Bayern win was worth eight points, and that total sits in eighth place before Wednesday's games.
Why it matters
Bayern sit in the top eight for now despite their head coach's absence, while Atlético are in the playoff places with four games left. For Nigerian fans, Lookman's next chance at a 10th Champions League goal is matchday five.
