Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital, five days after he collapsed while watching the club's second team train last Friday, 23 October. Sporting director Max Eberl gave the news to German broadcaster ARD on Wednesday 28 October, shortly before Bayern's DFB-Pokal tie against Magdeburg, BBC Sport and ESPN report.
Eberl said doctors had found the cause of the collapse: meningeal irritation, which BBC Sport describes as an inflammation of the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord. The 40-year-old Belgian will now continue his recovery at home with rest and medication.
"Given the circumstances, he's doing well," Eberl told ARD. "He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us." He added that he was "very confident" Kompany would soon be back on the touchline "operating at 100%".
No return date has been set. Bayern said on Saturday it would be a matter of "weeks, not days" before Kompany is back in the dugout, and his assistant Aaron Danks told reporters after Wednesday's game that there was still no timeline, according to AP.
Kompany had been ill with a virus in the days before the collapse and missed some training sessions. He also missed the news conference before last week's Champions League game against Arsenal, but was on the touchline for the 2-2 draw the following night.
Danks has taken charge in his absence. Bayern won 3-1 at Freiburg on Sunday to go back top of the Bundesliga, then beat second-tier Magdeburg 6-1 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday with Harry Kane rested. Kane, the new Ballon d'Or winner, received a guard of honour from his team-mates before kick-off, The Guardian reports.
The Bundesliga says Danks and the coaching staff will also lead the team in Saturday's Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena on 31 October (18:30 WAT).
