Ismail Jakobs retires from Senegal to focus on Galatasaray and family

Galatasaray left-back Ismail Jakobs has retired from Senegal international football at 27, ending a Lions of Teranga career that spanned 33 caps, two FIFA World Cups and multiple Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, Goal and AfricaSoccer reported on 28–29 October.
Jakobs announced the decision on Instagram. "I joined the national team as a young boy and I am leaving it as a mature man," he wrote, according to Foot Mercato quotes carried by AfricaSoccer and Goal. He said he wants to focus on his club career and "devote more valuable time to myself and my family," adding that time is precious and some moments do not come around twice.
Born in Cologne to a Senegalese father, Jakobs came through FC Köln, won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with Germany in 2021, then switched allegiance to Senegal in 2022. He debuted in September that year and became a regular from Senegal's second group game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he assisted as the Lions reached the round of 16 before losing to England.
Across those 33 appearances he featured at four major tournaments. Goal notes that Senegal's AFCON title at the start of 2026 — later stripped in a CAS-bound administrative dispute with Morocco after the scandal-hit final — was the highlight of his international peak, and that his last Senegal outing was the World Cup round-of-32 exit to Belgium last summer. He has not been capped since.
For TuSport readers the desk angle sits in Istanbul, not only Dakar. Jakobs is a Galatasaray starter this season — Goal counts 12 appearances in all competitions already — sharing a Süper Lig dressing room with Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen. Nigerian and West African audiences tracking Osimhen's club week therefore also lose a Senegal World Cup left-back from the same squad sheet: one Lions of Teranga pillar steps away while the Super Eagles' No.9 keeps going.
That club framing is the exclusive value beyond a bare retirement wire. Senegal's next AFCON qualifying date against Sudan is listed for 12 November 2026 on AfricaSoccer's schedule note; Jakobs will not be part of that window. Galatasaray's contract with the defender runs to next summer, Goal adds, so the club chapter — and the Osimhen link Nigerian readers follow — remains the live story.
TuSport is not inventing a Senegal successor at left-back or predicting Galatasaray selection. The verified facts stand: 33 caps, two World Cups, Instagram retirement confirmed across Goal, AfricaSoccer and Fanatik, family-and-club rationale in his own words, and a Süper Lig context that ties Senegal's exit to the same Galatasaray side Nigerian fans watch every week.
