How did Brighton win at the Etihad?

Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute and Brighton held on for a 1-0 Premier League win at Manchester City on Saturday, The Guardian and Opta Analyst reported. It was Brighton's first away win over City in any competition, at the 18th attempt.

Lewis Dunk took a free-kick quickly to Diego Gómez. Gómez crossed, Matheus Nunes missed the clearance, Maxim De Cuyper laid the ball off and Ayari finished into an empty net with Gianluigi Donnarumma stranded, The Guardian wrote.

How did City respond?

City finished with 21 shots, The Guardian's Opta notes said, their most without scoring in a Premier League home game since November 2024. Iliman Ndiaye headed wide from a Nico O'Reilly cross late on, earlier ran from halfway and shot at Verbruggen, then saw another effort tipped onto the bar. Erling Haaland was denied before the break after Elliot Anderson's work. Jérémy Doku's late poke was smothered by Verbruggen, Opta Analyst said.

Brighton also missed a chance to make it 2-0 early in the second half when De Cuyper fired over from Ayari's cross. Jack Hinshelwood later put a lob into the side netting after Georginio Rutter's pass. Brighton kept a sixth Premier League clean sheet this season, the most in the division, Opta Analyst reported, and have won five of their last six league matches with clean sheets in all five of those wins.

The Guardian said City had loud penalty appeals when Luka Vuskovic handled and when Ndiaye's cross appeared to strike Lewis Dunk's arm; neither was given. Enzo Maresca started Gianluigi Donnarumma and brought on Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and others as City chased the game. Marc Guéhi and Cherki had been left out of the starting XI after the Aston Villa defeat, with Nunes and Ayyoub Bouaddi selected instead, The Guardian reported.

Where does that leave the table?

BBC Sport's Premier League table listed City on 21 points from nine games and Brighton on 19. The Guardian said Brighton are third and two points behind the leaders. City have now lost consecutive Premier League games for the first time since August 2025, Opta Analyst noted, and failed to score at home in the league for the first time in 23 games, since a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham in August 2025 in The Guardian's Opta box.

Enzo Maresca told The Guardian he had not reviewed the free-kick that started the goal move. Fabian Hürzeler had spoken about wanting "revenge" after the midweek cup shootout, which finished 2-2 before City won on penalties, Opta Analyst reported. Ayari now has three league goals this season, Opta Analyst said, including two in his last three league games.

TuSport desk: first Etihad league defeat to Brighton

The Guardian's Opta box and Opta Analyst agree on the historic line: Brighton had never beaten Manchester City away in any competition before Saturday — 18 previous attempts, five draws and 12 defeats. Opta Analyst puts City's home attempts at 21 shots (six on target, 1.92 xG) against Brighton's seven (three on target, 1.0 xG), and says Brighton stopped a 24-game Premier League scoring run by City.

The Guardian times Ayari's goal at the 11th minute from a Matheus Nunes miss and a Maxim De Cuyper lay-off. The BBC Premier League table listed City on 21 points (7-0-2) and Brighton on 19 (6-1-2), two points off the top. The Guardian notes Brighton sit third.
