Man Utd v Roma: Dorgu and Shaw out, Rashford in doubt

Manchester United face Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November 2026 (20:00 GMT / 21:00 WAT) in Champions League matchday four. Michael Carrick is without Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu, Marcus Rashford is unlikely, and Gian Piero Gasperini's in-form Roma are short in midfield.

When and where is Man Utd v Roma?

Manchester United welcome Roma to Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November 2026 in matchday four of the Champions League league phase. Kick-off is 20:00 GMT, which is 21:00 WAT in Lagos, per BBC Sport and ESPN. Spain's Jesús Gil Manzano is the referee, with Carlos del Cerro Grande on VAR.

The two clubs come in from opposite ends of the form chart. United have gone nine games without a win, their worst start to a season since 1988, and Saturday's 2-0 loss at Chelsea was a third defeat in a row that left them 17th in the Premier League, above Crystal Palace only on goal difference. Roma beat Udinese 5-2 at the weekend, sit third in Serie A a point off Lazio and Inter, and have scored 21 goals in their last six matches, ESPN reported.

Who is out for Manchester United?

Michael Carrick confirmed on Monday that Luke Shaw will miss the game. Patrick Dorgu trained with the group for the first time but will not be risked. "We won't have him back for tomorrow but we'll see how he progresses through the week," Carrick told BBC Sport. That leaves United without a natural left-back again.

Benjamin Šeško (shin) and Manuel Ugarte (knee ligament) are long-term absentees, ESPN listed. Marcus Rashford's hip problem is the open question. Carrick said "we will have to see day by day" on Monday, ESPN lists him as a doubt, and The Standard reported on Tuesday that he has not returned to training and will not feature. We treat him as unlikely until the team sheet is out.

There is some relief. Kobbie Mainoo is available after his substitute run at Stamford Bridge, and Carrick said Leny Yoro is managing a tendon issue that "comes and goes" but has been "one of our best players" since returning. Asked about Lisandro Martínez's commitment after his red card against Chelsea, Carrick said: "I have no concerns about his commitment." The Argentine appears in the expected line-ups published by both ESPN and The Standard.

Who is out for Roma?

Gian Piero Gasperini travels short in midfield. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Manu Koné have thigh injuries and goalkeeper Mile Svilar has a broken finger, ESPN reported, while Paulo Dybala is a calf doubt. "We're missing players like Pellegrini, Dybala and Kone in similar areas, so we're trying to adapt," Gasperini told AS Roma's official site. "Rodrigo Mora is fine. The 17 players we have are all ready."

Gasperini named Santiago Castro as cover for Donyell Malen and played down United's slump. "We're preparing for it as if we were facing the best United team," he said.

What did Carrick say about his future?

Carrick insisted the questions over his job are not affecting the build-up. "You never know what's going to happen but that doesn't affect how we prepare for the game tomorrow," he told BBC Sport. ESPN reported that his position is expected to be reviewed during this month's international break, with Aston Villa due on 8 November before it.

On the European picture he was blunter. "You can get away with one or two defeats at this stage in terms of progressing, but you have to make amends. We are still in it," Carrick said. Roma have four points from three games after letting a 3-1 lead slip against Real Madrid with three late goals conceded.

What does the head-to-head say?

United have won all four of their home matches against Roma in UEFA competition, scoring 15 goals, and lead the overall European meetings five wins to two with one draw, according to ESPN. Roma have won just once in 21 UEFA away matches against English clubs, at Liverpool in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup. United have also gone nine games without a clean sheet, and Roma are averaging 2.8 goals a game this season, ESPN noted.

TuSport desk: one availability board, one open question

We set three Monday-to-Tuesday reports against each other instead of copying a single preview. BBC Sport carries Carrick's own words on Shaw, Dorgu, Yoro and Martínez; ESPN adds the full injury table for both squads plus the officials; The Standard has the latest Tuesday line on Rashford and Mainoo. Roma's absences come from ESPN and are checked against Gasperini's own news conference on the club site.

Only one item genuinely conflicts. Rashford moved from "day by day" in Carrick's briefing to "will not feature" in The Standard's Tuesday update, so we flag him as unlikely rather than ruled out. Expected line-ups published elsewhere are not repeated here as confirmed teams.

For Nigerian viewers, the clock is the usual winter one now that UK time has moved back: 20:00 GMT at Old Trafford is 21:00 WAT. That is the same 21:00 WAT slot as Atlético Madrid v Bayern Munich, so both matchday-four fixtures share the evening.

Why it matters

A home win would ease the pressure on Carrick before Villa and the break, while Roma can lift their own league-phase total against a United side short of defenders and goals. Follow Manchester United, the Champions League hub and Serie A, plus our earlier reports on Carrick's Chelsea news conference and Šeško's shin injury timeline. Times for every fixture are in our WAT kick-off times guide.
